U.S. News & World Report Unveils New Book: A Parent’s Guide to STEM

Parents, are you looking for a guide to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)? Or maybe you need a go-to resource to help explain what STEM is and why it’s important. You are in the right place. I have so much to share with you as I also learn more about STEM education resources like “A Parent’s Guide to STEM,” a new book that offers advice for parents looking for ways to help their kids excel in science, technology, engineering and math and prepare them for exciting careers.

Parents Guide to STEM Book

“A Parent’s Guide to STEM” is a lively and reader-friendly guide that explains what STEM is all about, covering everything from how to inspire scientific curiosity in a young child and help a student overcome a math slump to why coding is important and ways to impress a college admissions office. The guide includes numerous resources, such as websites that offer math and science homework assistance, lists of STEM scholarships and colleges that produce the most STEM graduates.

Employers are not finding enough young people with the critical skill sets they need to fill well-paying positions in STEM fields. Yet over the next 20 years, many of the nation’s most lucrative and rewarding job prospects will lie in these areas,” says Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News. “This guide provides a roadmap for success in STEM that every family – particularly those from underrepresented populations and in underserved communities – can benefit from.”

“A Parent’s Guide to STEM” is chock-full of practical advice, including:

  • Fabulous Family Field Trips
  • Great Reads for Young Scientists
  • Handy Online Homework Help
  • Science Fair Secrets
  • Best High Schools for STEM
  • Tips on Picking the Right High School Courses
  • Cool Contests and Competitions
  • College Majors That Rock
  • How to Conquer Test Anxiety
  • STEM Scholarships

Throughout the guide, outstanding young men and women in a range of STEM professions offer words of wisdom. From a cybersecurity expert and an automotive technician to a software developer and an aerospace engineer, they describe their paths to success and how, in many cases, they turned obstacles or setbacks into advantages that propelled them forward. (U.S. News & World Report)

I’m looking forward to diving into this book. These are the kind of resources that are important for families. We make an important difference when the entire familia can begin to understand how our students can benefit from a STEM education and how to get involved.

Save and Share Your Summer Trips with These Online Tools #VZWbuzz

We recently took our first out-of-state road trip as a family. For some, driving out of your own state isn’t a big deal but in Texas, getting out of our state usually is the longest part of our trip.

As a mom, I was ready to get to experience this road trip with mi familia. As a blogger, I was excited to share with you a little bit of our experience. Thanks to great mobile service from Verizon Wireless, I was able to do so. From Texas to California, our signal stayed strong. Only in the Chisos Mountains at Big Bend National Park did we lose service but if there’s any where you want to be disconnected, it’s there. What a beautiful place to take in the views.

One part I didn’t want to miss though was capturing the trip online. I didn’t share every moment of our time together because when it comes to family, there are moments that I keep sacred to us four. That’s why I like using these tools because I can create the story that I choose to share online because, Queridos, that’s what we are doing. We are creating our own stories. Let’s capture them!

Share Your Summer Trips with These Online Tools

Blogger or not, you, too, may want to capture what you shared online about your summer vacations. Here are some tools and tips:

1. Create your own unique hashtag. Pick something that no one else is using so it will be easier to gather all of your shares. (A ‘share’ is anything you send out on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Vine, etc.) We used #4GUnitTravel and I’ll continue to use this for future trips.

2. Use IFTTT to set up a recipe so that you can save every link to every share. Since you will likely be sharing from more than one social media platform, you will need to set up a recipe for each. Here’s an example that I set up on IFTTT: Capture All Links to IG shares with specific hashtag (Note: you will need to sign up for a free IFTTT account to use these recipes. You can thank me later if this is the first time you use IFTTT.)

IFTTT Instagram to Google Drive

3. Set up a TagBoard with your hashtag. If you do this before your trip, you will create an online story of your entire trip. This is s a fun feature for you or others to see what you are doing across all of your platforms. If you skip this step before you leave, you can always create a TagBoard after your trip to see it as a recap.

4. Once the vacation is over, you can use Storify to gather all that you shared. You can embed this in your blog or on your website (like I did below), or you can simply share the link with family or others for them to see as well.

TIP: Test out each recipe and tool before leaving. Always do a test run to make sure your hashtag is being captured.

There you go! Set up these tools and share away. You won’t have to worry about gathering all of the photos and videos that you create on the go. They will be in one place for you when you get home. Happy traveling, Queridos!

Get General Admission Passes to San Antonio Screening of INSIDE OUT #InsideOut

I fell in love with this movie since the moment that I saw the trailer in the theater months ago. All. the. emotions. Literally. Watch the trailer for yourself below. I can’t wait to see the movie!

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by Lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned — both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them — Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

From Baseball to Robotics, Dad, You’re Doing a Good Job! #DoinGood

DISCLAIMER: This is part of a sponsored collaboration with Minute Maid and DiMe Media.  Minute Maid will provide this prize. Minute Maid is not a sponsor, administrator or connected in any other way with the contest – and all opinions are my own.

When my husband and I were engaged, we knew that we wanted children right away. We planned to have four boys and we made plans for all of the baseball, basketball and soccer games that we’d attend as a family. We imagined that we’d have one boy in each sport and I’d joke that my husband’s athletic talent would have to grand enough for all four boys because God did not bless me with an ounce of athleticism.

First Tball League #DoinGood QueMeansWhat

Well, we didn’t count on two things

1 – We’d only have two boys. After our second blessing of a son, we realized that two is our perfect number.

2 – Our boys wouldn’t want to play sports after all.

With our oldest son, we started out trying T-ball and soccer at the local YMCA. We also enrolled him in karate at a local dojo. As parents, we thoroughly enjoyed it. However, my son has only really stuck with karate. I began introducing my son to robotics. That has seemed to stick. The more we learned, the more he engaged. And, of course, little brother wants to do whatever big brother does.

As a tech education advocate, this is music to my ears. As far as my husband, I know he wishes the boys would play at least one sport. Sports is where my husband really connects and can teach and lead our sons. Don’t misunderstand. My husband understands without a shadow of a doubt the importance and the value of an education in technology. He just didn’t plan on his son’s favorite sport to be a Robotics Competition.

To my husband – the love of my life, I say:

“You are doing a good job! Really, you are doing an outstanding job. I can’t imagine how our boys would exist without you. My favorite moments are when I catch our sons gazing up at you in admiration. You are their hero. And my heart absolutely melts when I get to witness the mutual love you all have for one another.”

My husband is a ‘numbers guy’ – he knows sports stats, he is in finance and numbers just makes sense to him. He didn’t plan on being a techie or a dad of a techie. But you wouldn’t know it when you see him with his sons. More importantly, my sons don’t know any different. All they know is that Dad loves them and wants the very best for them. Mi amor, this Father’s Day (and every day) I want you to know that YOU ARE DOING A GOOD JOB.

Yes, we have two sons. The youngest does enjoy tech gadgets but much to my husband’s delight, he recently shared with us that he is now ready to try baseball. ¡Vamos a jugar!

Check out this new video from my friends at Minute Maid. Share it with the friends and family in your life who could use a reminder that they, too, are doing a great job as a parent.

YOUR TURN – Enter for a chance to win $50 Visa Gift Card by Sharing Your “Doin’ Good” Story
