One of our favorite places to visit in our beloved San Antonio is the Witte Museum. We were invited to visit the South Texas Heritage Center for a Mommy Blogger & Me Meetup. It was an excellent day to explore the STH Center, meet fellow bloggers and their kiddos and enjoy the rest of all that the Witte Museum has to offer. While I could write at least one post of each exhibit at the museum, I’ll keep this one to the fun we had at the South Texas Heritage Center. Here is only a bit of what we experienced.
First, it’s not just an exhibit or a gallery. There are live and interactive demonstrations in the Will Smith classroom and Will Smith amphitheater. We arrived in time to see Chuckbox Cuisine, where we learned how the cowboys ate and what they used to cook their food. Later, we learned about Ropes & Brands. The boys even got to practice ‘branding’ cattle.
Inside the galleries, we saw paintings, sculptures, artifacts of saddles, weapons, Comanches, cowboys, vaqueros and much more. We even saw talking holograms of Mexcian oil men tell their stories about South Texas.
What my boys enjoyed the most was the “Vaquero y Cowboy” demonstration in the Will Smith Amphitheatre. Uno vaquero and a cowboy meet over a campfire and share with one another their history, struggles and what they love about who they are. This was my favorite too because of the Vaquero’s real story of what it was like for him and his family to fight for this great state of Texas and still have their property stolen. Oh, and the Irish Cowboy belts out a great song too 😉
The museum is open Mon, Wed – Sat 10a-5p; Tue 10a-8pm with free admission from 3-8p; Sun 12p-5p. Follow them on Twitter @WitteMuseum and visit them on Facebook.com/WitteMuseum for more information about what’s going on at the Witte.
Special thanks to the Witte Museum for allowing us to spend our day learning about South Texas Heritage! It was a special day for me and my boys to go with my grandma or Mamo. She enjoyed the day too.
And thank you to our readers for visiting ¿Qué Means What? The Witte sends their thanks also in the way of allowing ¿Qué Means What?
