What makes mi familia happy these days looks a bit different than just a few short years ago. As my boys discover how they prefer to spend their time, I realize it’s part of this parenting journey – I’m guessing what parents who have older kids already know. A few years ago, my boys were playing more sports on the weekends. Lately, they’ve opted for all-things-STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) events. I’m cool with whatever makes them happy.
We recently took a trip to Johnson City to attend the opening of the Science Mill Museum. The boys had a great time! They were engaged in the exhibits and were happy that there were outdoor exhibits too! Rocket launching outside?! That makes a little boy happy!
What makes them happier than STEM events on the weekend? STEM events on the weekend with a favorite tia! My sister invited us to the school STEM fair where she was displaying the DaVinci Robot that is used in the operating room where she is the lead nurse. We didn’t tell them that their tia would be there and they were super surprised and happy to see her and her robot!
It’s no secret that I’m a huge advocate for STEM education. While I seek out events that we can attend as families to engage my sons’ interest in science, I’m grateful for movies like BIG HERO 6 which also promotes STEM education for young kids. Letting the kids see how cool STEM can be, creates an excitement to learn more! If you didn’t catch the movie in theaters, it’s now available now on Disney Movies Anywhere, and on Blu-ray Feb 24.
