When reporter Kim Barker’s (Tina Fey) life needs something more, she decides to ‘shake it all up’ by taking an assignment in a war zone. There, in the midst of chaos, she finds the strength she never knew she had. Sometimes it takes saying ‘WTF’ to find the life you were always destined to have. Also starring Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton, the film is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”) from a screenplay by Robert Carlock (“Saturday Night Live,” “30 Rock”).

The Book: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan

The book, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan (now available as Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (The Taliban Shuffle MTI): Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan)
from Kim Barker is a memoir of her experiences overseas.

When Kim Barker was asked how did she get assigned to cover Afghanistan and Pakistan in an interview on KARE11, Barker said that she heard a rumor that the Chicago Tribune was looking to send more female reporters overseas after 9/11 to cover war and conflict. She walked in to the foreign editor’s office and introduced herself and said, “I’m a Metro reporter. I’m single and I’m childless. Therefore, I’m expendable and I’ll go anywhere you want me to go.” We can assume that she was looking for a change in her life.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Movie with Tina Fey

The idea of Tina Fey portraying Kim Barker in a movie was pretty much a given after New York Times Chief Book Critic Michiko Kakutani published her review of  “The Taliban Shuffle” stating:

It’s not just that Ms. Barker is adept at dramatizing her own adventures as a reporter — though she develops the chops of a veteran foreign correspondent, she depicts herself as a sort of Tina Fey character, who unexpectedly finds herself addicted to the adrenaline rush of war.

According to Barker, Paramount had optioned the book on behalf of Tina Fey within two weeks after Kakutani’s review. (WBEZ’s Worldview)
