The Internship ~ Movie Review

the-internship-movieBilly (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world.  Trying to prove they are not obsolete, they defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brilliant college students.    But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation’s most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.

I’m a fan of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. My husband and I watch WEDDING CRASHERS any chance we get. However, that was my concern about this movie. Could they pull off WEDDING CRASHERS again? Frankly, I’m not interested in a sequel. (Unless, they really make one, then I’d just have to see it.) Just didn’t want to see it in THE INTERNSHIP.

THE INTERNSHIP stands all on its own. I found myself laughing out loud more than I expected. Admittedly, I’m a Google fan, too. I work in the world of online/social media so a glimpse in to the Google campus was a bonus. This movie offered more than just a hip, cool setting.

Reminiscent of Vaughn’s DODGEBALL, there is a competition and the other guys are led by a total d-bag pompous tool. Much of humorous writing is funny because you see it play out on a daily basis, in other words, it’s funny because it’s true.

(Disclaimer: I may or may not completely relate to either group mentioned below. These are general blanket statements that may or may not be received well.)

At the ‘normal’ age of an intern, most think they do know more than their elders. They don’t think they have much to learn and prefer to just ‘get connected’ and push through to the top disregarding who needs to be stepped on to get there. On the other hand, it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Is the wisdom Billy and Nick have gained from their life-long sales career even worth sharing in this digital age? I mean, the movie opens with the two of them taking a client to dinner as a sales call while they are completely unaware that their company has gone out of business.

The humorous journey that unfolds is worth watching. THE INTERNSHIP is light-hearted and ideal for classic Vaughn-Wilson comedy.
