San Antonio Symphony Honors Tejano Music Legend Emilio Navaira with Navaira Brothers

It’s been almost three years since the world lost a Tejano music legend – Emilio Navaira. So many of us Tejanos have fond memories of his music playing in the background of our family gatherings, on the dance floor of weddings and quinceñeras, and in the car on family road trips. Honestly, I still listen to his music today but I never thought I’d hear it performed by the San Antonio Symphony. A Tribute to Emilio Navaira is happening, Queridos!
This week, Navaira’s music will continue to live on with the San Antonio Symphony and Guest conductor Troy Peters, music director of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio. Peters will lead the Symphony in A Tribute to Emilio Navaira. Navaira’s own sons Diego and Emilio IV will sing and play alongside his original backing band members, Peters, and the Symphony. Highlights include favorites Bailando Contigo, ¿Donde Andará?, Cómo le haré, and It’s Not the End of the World, all arranged for orchestra by Troy Peters.
This special performance will be on Thursday, January 31, 8 PM at the Tobin Center. Get your tickets online at sasymphony.org.

Navaira Brothers

Emilio IV and Diego Navaira have followed in their father’s footsteps as talented musicians. Their band, The Last Bandoleros, just wrapped up a tour in Germany and before that they were on tour with Sting. The Last Bandoleros music is a good mix of Tex-Mex, Country, Rock-n-Roll and a bit of pop. Take a listen to this song dedicated to their father.
Emilio Navaira left us all his music to continue to make memories with our own families. Still, I wonder if his bigger gifts are the talent and passion for music he gave his sons. You can find the Navaira brothers performing with another San Antonio favorite band Buttercup at Francis Bogside on January 29: Buttercup + the Navaira Brothers – Free Show Facebook Event.
