Disney’s FRANKENWEENIE on Blu-Ray/DVD Review

Frankenweenie is a story of a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, and his love for his pet dog. After a car accident, Sparky, the dog, dies and through a science class lesson, Victor brings him back to life. However, this is a Tim Burton movie and it’s not that simple.

Admittedly, I did not take my boys to see this movie in the theaters. From the previews, I thought it would be too scary. What does mom know? To my surprise, my 5 year-old son has asked more than once to see this movie since then. Thanks to Disney, we received a copy of Frankenweenie (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy) to preview.Frankenweenie Blu-Ray/DVD

I mean, I like Tim Burton but hadn’t seen anything I thought my young boys would like.  This was appropriately scary and twisted for the little ones. My 3 year-old did run out of the room once but still asked to play the movie again. So, who knows.

As a mom who is encouraging her sons to be more creative and to love science, this was interesting. The movie opens with Victor’s family sitting to watch a film Victor made himself starring his dog Sparky. Creative. Fast forward to Victor digging up the dead dog to stitching him up and finally to running electricity through him because of science … well, that’s risky to show a boy who just got a new dog! (just kidding)

Seriously, the story unfolds to reveal how a boy not only deals with loss but how he and the whole town deal when a science experiment goes horribly wrong. Once Victor’s schoolmates learn of his secret, they fear he will win the science fair and seek to revive their own dead pets. That’s never good.

What I liked: The lessons of loving a pet and consequences. It’s in black and white stop-motion animation.  (We watched the DVD. The Blu-Ray is in 3D and it has to be pretty awesome!)

What I didn’t like: Nothing. Just remember, this is Tim Burton … The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland.

Frankenweenie features an all-star cast including the voices of Emmy Award winner Catherine O’Hara, Tony Award winner Martin Short, Academy Award winner Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell, and Golden Globe winner Winona Ryder.
