Cancer Action Network – Where Does Your Congressman Stand on Cancer Research?

After learning that cancer is the number one killer of U.S. Hispanics, I wanted to share more information with my readers and about a local event for you to learn where congressmen candidates stand on the issues.

Cancer has surpassed heart disease to become the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the United States, according to an American Cancer Society report released in September 2012.

The research indicates that cancer deaths can be prevented and lives saved among Hispanics if we increase use of proven cancer screening tests; make the hepatitis B and human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine more widely available; and reduce tobacco use, alcohol consumption and obesity rates. Indeed, this message could be life-saving for all Americans.

The triad of poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and obesity is the second leading cause of cancer in the United States, surpassed only by tobacco use. (CNN Health, Cancer Now No. 1 Killer of U.S. Hispanics)

50% of men and 33% of women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Government officials make decisions every day that impact people with cancer or at risk of cancer. (ASN CAN)

The American Cancer Society – Cancer Action Network (ASN CAN) encourages candidates to share their positions on issues that matter to people with cancer – a disease that this year will be diagnosed in an estimated 110,470 people in Texas and will kill an estimated 36,820 people in the state.
