What Does It Mean to be Latina?
I love this question! Put 20 Latinas in one room and ask them this question and I guarantee you that you will get 20 different answers. That’s what makes our heritage and culture so beautiful. We are all different. Many times, we (myself included) want to put all the Latinas in a box and label it LATINA. That way we know exactly what a “Latina” is supposed to look like, act like, think like, etc. However, the one sure thing I’ve learned while exploring my own cultural identity, is that one way of being Latina does not exist.
Mira las Latinas who are already having this conversation with Macy’s – Jasmine Villegas, a singer and actress; Kika Rocha, a beauty expert; and Julie Sarinana, a successful fashion blogger. With three different backgrounds and careers, their Latina identity will surely differ.
What does it mean to be Latina to you? To me, it means being proud of my heritage. appreciating where I came from and celebrating differences and similarities in our Latino community.
