Balancing Your Dreams, Art and Relationships: La La Land Movie

Are you a dreamer? Do you create art and dream about it? What do the closest people in your life think about your art or your dream to be an artist, actor, dancer, musician, or creator?

I’m always intrigued by people who have created a full-time living with their art. Art is subjective both in the creations and the path to achieving success. I think that’s why it’s a challenge to manage the relationships in your life with others who might not understand you as an artist or believe in your dreams.

While I appreciate a great musical, the La La Land movie has caught my attention mostly because of the reason it was important to the director, Damien Chazelle, to make this film and tell this story.

“To me, it was important to make a movie about dreamers, about two people who have these giant dreams that drive them, that bring them together, but also tear them apart,” Chazelle said.

La La Land Movie in Theaters December 2016

Chazelle wrote the Oscar-winning movie Whiplash, the film about a promising young drummer who enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential. In La La Land, he wanted to see if he could make a film that channels the magic and energy of the most poignantly romantic French and American musicals of filmmaking’s Golden Age … into our more complicated and jaded age.

La La Land is a very different movie from Whiplash in many ways. But they both deal with something that’s really personal to me: how you balance life and art, how you balance reality and dreams and also, specifically, how you balance your relationship to your art with your relationships with other people. With La La Land, I wanted to tell that story using music, song, and dance. I think the musical as a genre is a great vehicle for expressing that balancing act between dreams and reality.” – La La Land Writer and Director Damien Chazelle

La La Land tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams. Along with Gosling and Stone, La La Land also stars John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott, Josh Pence.

La La Land is playing in select theaters now and will expand to more theaters on Christmas Day (including San Antonio).
